Garden Chairs

Rietveld-inpsired Garden Chair

Garden Chair in Sage Green

Bring a classic shape, perfectly designed, to your garden.

Our Garden Chair

The Garden Chair is a re-design of an iconic Rietveld Chair. Gerhardt Rietveld, a Dutch architect, designed the original chair in 1918. One of these sits on display at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City. For chair aficionados, our version is both more comfortable and more sturdy.

Our chair is more upright than the Rietveld, creating those comfortable angles for back, butt and knees. The legs and struts are attached to each other by notching the pieces to fit into each other; critical joins are also doweled. Although screws are used, no screw heads show on top of the wood. This feature protects the wood from water, rot, and eventualy wobbliness.

Construction Detail

Like the Westport, Lodge, and the Adirondack, this chair is perfect for outdoor use (although you certainly can use them indoors). They complement gardens, porches, balconies, docks... you choose.

About the Woods We Use

  • White Pine is historically correct in accordance with the early construction of Westport Chairs
  • White Pine paints easily
  • White pine works well with the Westport Chair because the design of the chair allows water to run off of it. There is no place where water sits and where damage could develop.
  • There are no exposed, visible screwheads in the chair. Many chair designs have exposed screwheads where water can settle and run down the screw, rotting the wood.
  • We use a wood sealant on the board edges to prevent the edges from cracking.
  • We paint all sides of every piece of wood before the chair is assembled, helping to further protect the wood.
  • We use top quality, clear, knot-free Pine.
  • There is a natural preservative oil in Cypress known as cypressene, which gives the heartwood resistance to insects and decay.
  • Cypress grows slowly. The growth rings are close together, making it a very hard and dense wood. It shrinks less than other wood and resists the elements well.
  • If left outdoors in its natural state the wood will weather well.
  • There are no exposed, visible screwheads in the chair. Many chair designs have exposed screwheads where water can settle and run down the screw, rotting the wood.
  • There are very few knots in cypress and no sap, so the wood will not "bleed". It is therefore very nice wood for paint or stain.

The simple, yet effective alterations have maintained the look and feel of the original, beautiful, innovative Rietveld Chair. The clean lines suit both modern and historic gardens, not to mention breezy porches, spacious sunrooms, and welcoming gazebos.
